Newtown railway station is located on the Main Suburban line, serving the Sydney suburb of Newtown. It is served by Sydney Trains T2 Inner West & South line services. ==History== The original Newtown station opened on 26 September 1855 with the opening of the Main Suburban line.〔(Newtown Station ) NSWrail.net〕 It was located to the west of King Street, about where the former Crago's Flour Mills now stand. Mortuary facilities were provided from 1875.〔(Newtown Railway Station Group and Former Tram Depot ) NSW Environment & Heritage〕 The line through Newtown was quadruplicated in 1892,〔"NSW Railway Passenger Services 1880-1905" ''Australian Railway History'' Vol 56 No 810 April 2005 page 141〕 and a new station was built at the present location. This station consisted of two side platforms and an island platform in the centre. The site of the original station became a goods yard. The track through Newtown was sextuplicated in 1927 in association with electrification works.〔"Sydney Electric Trains from 1926-1960" ''Australian Railway Historical Society Bulletin'' April 2001 page 128〕 As part of the works, the northern side platform and the island platform on the middle pair of tracks were taken out of use and demolished, while the southern side platform was modified and converted into the current island platform.〔 On 29 October 2012, a new entrance to the station was opened, constructed as part of a major upgrade to the station and surrounding precinct. The upgrade work included demolition of the existing platform building, replacing the platform surface and canopies, and the construction of a new concourse featuring lifts and enhanced stair access to the platform. The existing access to the platform, via a single narrow flight of stairs connected to a heritage entrance building on King Street, was closed but retained as an emergency exit. Several buildings were refurbished and converted to retail use, including the former entrance building.〔(New Newtown Station Opens ) ''Rebuilding the Nation'' 29 October 2012〕〔(New-look Newtown station ) ''South Sydney Herald'' 29 November 2012〕〔(Newtown Railway Station ) Caldis Cook Group〕 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「Newtown railway station, Sydney」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
